May Newsletter

The season is well under way now and a lot of good catches have been reported on all our waters. We have seen some nice

fish at the Competition weigh ins and posted on our Facebook page. Hopefully this good fishing will continue through the summer months.

Unfortunately it has been brought to our attention on numerous occasion that members are clearly not complying with the
club rules. There has been instances of members failing to carry their permit, fishing multiple rods, ground baiting, swim feeders and camping. So I would ask you all to familiarise yourself with the rules and bye laws of the club and comply, as ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse. Members failing to comply with the rules will not have their membership renewed.

Introduction to Fly Fishing

The club is planning on running some fly fishing lessons if we identify enough interest. The lessons will be available to all members, although juniors will require to be accompanied by an adult (not necessarily a club member). So if you are interested in learning to fly
fish or just feel you could benefit from some advice on casting, setting up your gear or what to use and when,  drop me an email or text. Once we have an idea of numbers we will put some dates in the diary and set up some tuition. treasurer@pgac.org.uk

Stocking

Stocking has continued as planned with £3500 of trout stocked to date. In addition to the Browns and Rainbows a few Tiger Trout have been also caught this season, however these were actually stocked last June so have been hiding out somewhere.

Senior Member Days

The Bothie will be open on the 29th May from 11am-2pm. The gatherings will continue throughout the season on every second Wednesday thereafter. With the Gryffe fishing so well it’s a good opportunity to wet a line and try some of Jim’s bacon rolls. Keep an eye on the
Website & Facebook for any changes to the plan.

Perfect Conditions and Good Catches at the Lake of Mentieth.

Great day with some big catches at the Lake of Mentieth on Sunday. The weather looked good for fishing when we all set out at 9am and at 9:02 Jim Kelly caught the first fish of the day in hotel bay on a Diawl Bach (little devil in Welsh). Again the little devil worked well on a floating line in Lochend bay for top rod of the day; Andy Durk and boat partner Chris King landing 28 trout between them. Andy caught 15 pipping Chris into 2nd place with 13. The next 2 top bags of 11 trout went to young Andy McKay catching at the Butts using a floating line on various flies and club President Archie Blair. Archie fished at the bottom of Cages Bay using a sink tip line and foam daddy, Diawl Bach and hopper. Young Andy took 3rd place with his first fish caught at 9:26 while Archie did not catch until 9:50. Another notable catch of the day was Derek Barclay with 10, mostly on dry flies also at the Butts. A good day with 16 club members catching 78 trout.  Full results can be seen on the club website.

The club will be running its second outings to Lake of Menteith on Saturday 3rd August. There are still a few places left, drop me an email if you want to attend. treasurer@pgac.org.uk

2023 SANACC Competitions

This year as usual the Club had two representatives in the Scottish National Championship for the chance to fish for Scotland and also two teams in the Scottish Club Championship.

In the National Championship, club president and fly champion Archie Blair and Iain Lindsay both qualified from their heats at Lake of Mentieth to fish in the semi finals. Iain fished his semi final at Lintrathan Loch but unfortunately didn’t qualify. Archie fished his semifinal at Harelaw and fished well catching enough fish to qualify for the National Final to be fished at Lake of Menteith in September.

In the Scottish Club Championship held on Saturday evenings at the Lake of Mentieth, the first 3 man team (Archie Blair, Iain Lindsay and Derek Barclay) competed on the 3rd of June, all caught good bags and qualifyied for the semi final. The second team (Andy McKay, Andy Elkin and Andy Durk) Team Andy! fished on the 10th June and also manage to catch well and qualify for the semi final.

Both teams are fishing the semi final at the Lake of Mentieth on the 11th August and the club would like to wish them all the best.
