Report

Great start to the seasons with 32 anglers catching 60 trout.  The weather was very kind for most of the day with the rain coming on and wind picking up later on. It was good to see a mix of brown and rainbow trout getting caught all around the loch. Some excellent over wintered rainbows and brownies which hopefully sets a good start for the coming season. It was a draw for the first fish of the day when Rab Matheson and Alan Sneddon jnr both hooking trout on their first cast with the spinner while others were still making way to their fishing spots. Rab and Alan were fishing either side of the boathouse and both followed very quickly with a second trout. The others made their way to various spots round the loch.

Winner on the day Andy Durk started in Hills Bay getting his 6 fish in extra quick time using a cats whisker fly. 2nd equal was Glen Miller and Ken Buchanan both also having 6 trout, Ken getting 5 of his 6 on the spinner in Corlic Bay and Glen catching his 6 on the fly not far from the boat house.  Craig Fleming fished along the dam wall catching 4 with a yellow dancer fly and his third fish was a nice looking brown trout.

1st and 2nd in the juniors was Kia and Leo Sneddon both float fishing near the boathouse with maggots. If there had been a prize for perseverance it would have gone to another junior Blair Rennie who didn’t give up until the very final whistle, although unsuccessful on this occasion I’m sure he’ll be a junior to watch in future competitions.

At the moment, with the fish spread about you can walk round the loch catching fish or you don’t have to travel far from your car for the chance of a trout.

Report

Good turnout for the All-Lures competition on Saturday; 22 seniors and 5 juniors catching 17 trout between them. The conditions weren’t great for fishing but there was still some good sport enjoyed and the fish appear to be well spread out.  One of the first fish was caught by Chris Rennie on the fly in Hills Bay.
The juniors’ ran a close competition with Blair Rennie taking top spot with a 2lb 9oz tiger trout caught on the fly in Hills Bay. This catch outdid his dad’s best fish of the day!  Second place went to Leo Sneddon catching a nice rainbow trout at the boathouse while fishing with a float. Also using a float, Ava Morton caught a trout at the boathouse gaining her 3rd place.
The seniors comp was also a close fought battle with Craig Fleming taking 1st place with 3 rainbow trout weighing 5lb 13 1/2oz all caught on hoppers and a floating line along the north shore. Second spot went to Iain Lindsay also with 3 fish weighing 6oz less than Craig. Iain caught his fish on an intermediate line and wet flies at various spots round the loch. Third place went to Ken Buchanan with 2 trout weighing  3lb 8 1/2 oz.

Biggest trout of the day was an excellent over wintered brown trout weighing 3lb 2oz caught on the fly by John Miller.  Another catch of note was Rhys Duncan with a couple of pike in Corlic Bay.

There were several reports of fish hooked and lost all round the loch and the most successful method today was fly fishing.

The wind dropped for a short time and fish could be seen moving all round the loch with a few caught on small flies and floating lines. This however was very short lived as the cold wind picked up and this put the fish down again. With a decent spell of weather these fish will feed more consistently near the surface.

It’s good to see members getting involved in the competitions hopefully with the planned stocking policy there will be some more good results and great sport.
